“Civil War Washington: Studies in Transformation” draws on the methods of many fields—literary studies, history, geography, computer-aided mapping and the history of medicine and science—to create a digital resource that chronicles the War’s impact on the city, as it transformed Washington from a sleepy Southern town to the symbolic center of the Union and nation. At the same time, this project documents the impact of Civil War Washington on the two men, Lincoln and Whitman, whose writings best epitomize that war.
